Caterpillar India's Community Engagement
Corporate Social Responsibility
At Caterpillar, we believe in the power of responsibility. Through our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, we are committed to making a meaningful impact on the health, welfare, and economic well-being of the communities where we live and work.
We support environmental responsibility through sustainable development; leveraging technology and innovation to increase efficiency and productivity with less impact on the environment and helping our customers do the same. We also lead industry and community initiatives that share our commitment to making sustainable process possible in India and around the world.
Our CSR efforts are guided by three core pillars—Environment, Education, and Employability—with a shared focus on building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable communities.
Environment
We are dedicated to environmental sustainability, driving impactful programs across rural and urban India:
- Waterbody Conservation: Through initiatives like the Waterbody Conservation Program, we are restoring over 1,200 acres of polluted lakes, benefiting more than 100,000 people across 35 villages. In urban areas, we are installing 1,000 percolation wells to conserve rainwater, while in the rural region, constructed 400+ soak pits and recharge structures in 10 villages, improving water access for over 90,000 households and supporting agricultural livelihoods.
- Enhancing Green Cover: We’ve planted 40,000 saplings to develop Miyawaki forests in government schools. In Tamil Nadu, we’ve launched a community-led mangrove restoration initiative, planting over 92,000 saplings to enhance biodiversity, restore ecological balance, and strengthen coastal resilience.
- Solid Waste Management: Our programs empower local communities by training workers and officials, promoting waste segregation awareness, and establishing efficient waste processing systems. These efforts support 20,000 households in building cleaner, more resilient villages.
Education & Infrastructure
We are committed to improving access to quality education and essential infrastructure:
- Distributed Teaching Learning Material (TLM) kits to over 700 Anganwadis and upgraded 300+ government schools.
- Installed 4,500+ STEM libraries in government schools across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.
- Installed 1,000 solar streetlights across Tamil Nadu, enhancing safety and access for over 45,000 people.
- Deployed Mobile Science Labs, reaching 10,000 underprivileged children and promoting hands-on science education.
- Empowered 10,000 students in government schools with improved English learning through interactive, activity-based teaching methods.
Employability
We strive to create opportunities for individuals from underserved communities:
- Our “Learn and Earn” program provides technical training and a Diploma in Manufacturing Technology (DMT) to over 200 candidates at our manufacturing facilities.
- The “Build the Bridge” project has delivered job readiness training to more than 1,500 students, including individuals with disabilities, preparing them for meaningful employment.
