As our customers' work evolves, so do we.

Sustainability is our legacy and our future. Helping our customers improve quality of life and the quality of the environment has been core to who we are and what we do for a century. What’s changed — what’s constantly changing — is how we do it.

Over the course of 100 years, Caterpillar and our customers have navigated many challenges. Wars. Recessions. Globalization. The rise of technology. Today’s energy transition is simply the latest. We’re approaching it like we always do: By listening, learning, innovating and improving to provide solutions that work in the real world — with a promise to stand alongside our customers every step of the journey.

Fuel Choice: Past, Present And Future

The transition from diesel fuel to other sources of power may seem recent, but we’ve been supporting our customers’ fuel choices for a century now. As far back as the 1930s, for example, we converted our track-type tractors to run on butane and propane and our engines to burn natural gas. Today, we offer machines and engines capable of operating on biodiesel, biogas, hydrogen, hydrotreated vegetable oil and methanol. We’re even collaborating with companies like Microsoft to demonstrate the viability of hydrogen fuel cells to supply reliable, sustainable power.

No One-Size-Fits-All Solutions

Throughout our history, we’ve let our customers’ needs guide our priorities. It’s no different with the energy transition. Every Caterpillar customer’s journey to sustainability is unique, and we’re committed to meeting them where they are today — so we can help them get where they want to be tomorrow. That’s why we’re focused not on a single electric equipment solution but on holistic portfolio of offerings that helps facilitate the transition to electrified work.

Supporting A Circular Economy

Longevity doesn’t just apply to our business. It’s built into our products, too. We design many components with multiple lifecycles in mind. Once they reach the end of their first life, and customers return these used “cores” to a dealer, we’re often able to remanufacture them — returning components to original quality and performance specifications. Our Cat® Reman process helps keep high-value raw materials in productive use and produces 65-87% fewer greenhouse gas process emissions compared to manufacturing new parts.* It’s good for our customers, too.
