It was the first lengthy corporate document of its kind. There was no template for the project that Caterpillar undertook in 1974. No company until Caterpillar had ever created a formal code of business conduct; an ethics manual and operating principles for how to do business on a global scale. The CEO at the time wanted to call it the “Caterpillar Creed.” In this Diggin’ Into History episode, Corporate Archivist Lee Fosburgh and host Rusty Dunn get into the origin story for a document that has stood the test of time and will continue to guide the company’s future.
The words in this Code of Conduct define us. Despite our differences -- in geography, culture, language, and business -- we are one Caterpillar, one company united by these common principles and a shared commitment to the highest standards of conduct.
