In the UK, 37% of young people worry they lack the digital skills required to secure a good job. As industries across the UK—particularly construction, technology, and engineering—rely more on digital expertise, a gap is widening between employer needs and the learning opportunities available to young people. One such young person is Brandon.
Brandon, 19-years-old, dropped out of school at the age of 13 and faced numerous obstacles as he tried to carve out a path for himself. Moving to Glasgow at 15, he found himself uncertain of what direction to take, but his determination led him to The King’s Trust. Through collaboration with The King’s Trust, Caterpillar Foundation is helping young people like Brandon unlock career possibilities that can support their lives and communities by equipping them with the training, certifications, and real-world experience needed to break into industries like construction and technology.
Get Into Construction is a King’s Trust program supported by Caterpillar Foundation that Brandon joined where he learned about the construction sector and the training needed to earn certifications vital for pursuing work in the industry. During the program, Brandon’s leadership skills stood out, and he quickly became a role model for his peers. Afterwards, he was offered a work placement where he further honed his skills and gained experience.
Between April 2023 and March 2024, Caterpillar Foundation funding supported 20 employability programs, reaching 320 young people in communities across the UK. Through these courses, participants gained theoretical knowledge, necessary certifications, and practical experience, empowering them to take their first steps towards rewarding careers.
Caterpillar Foundation President, Asha Varghese, notes, “We know that the skills gaps, especially in digital, have the potential to leave a generation behind in an increasingly competitive and tech-driven world. Caterpillar Foundation is proud to collaborate with The King’s Trust to support young people’s futures, like Brandon’s, and also boost economic development in communities.”
