The Challenge

In San Marcos, Guatemala, the community relies heavily on the fishing and tourism industries. Mangrove forests play a vital role in both, consisting of salt-resistant trees that are critical to preserving a healthy local ecosystem.

In 2019, wildfire destroyed the Manchón Guamuchal mangrove forest, affecting the livelihoods of people within the region.

The Innovation

The Caterpillar Foundation, in collaboration with One Tree Planted and the Rainforest Alliance, restored 45 hectares of the forest by planting, nurturing and monitoring 90,000 mangrove trees.

The Impact

The restoration of the forest allowed community activities to resume — such as commercialized fishing, harvesting fruits and wood products, and tourism, including recreational fishing and bird-watching. The people of the region now have diversified means of providing for their families.
