Model of the Electro-Motive Diesel Locomotive

2010

In 2010, Progress Rail, a Caterpillar subsidiary, acquired Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. (EMD), one of the world’s original and largest manufacturers of diesel electric locomotives. The agreement expanded our reach and capabilities for rail and transit customers. This 1930s industrial design model of an EMD locomotive reflects the company’s long history as a diesel-electric pioneer in the rail industry.

Electro-Motive Diesel, Inc. was founded in 1922 as Electro-Motive Engineering Corporation. It was renamed Electro-Motive Company (EMC) before General Motors acquired it in 1930, and it later became Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD).

In 1924, EMC, as it was then called, created the first Electro-Motive gas-electric rail car. In the 1970s, the company provided Amtrak with locomotives for long-distance passenger rail service across the United States.
