1. How did your career bring you to Caterpillar and why was Caterpillar the best employer for you?
I retired as a Navy Captain after 24.5 years in the Supply Corps. I was commissioned through the U.S. Naval Academy, served on active duty as the Supply Officer in the USS Hammerhead (SSN-663) and at Naval Sea Systems Command. I was affiliated with the Naval Reserve for the balance of my career and held a variety of positions in several Reserve units that included two Commanding Officer tours and an Officer-in-Charge assignment.
I came to Caterpillar in 2010 from Honeywell International Inc., where I served as vice president and chief procurement officer responsible for setting strategic direction, developing and managing the supplier base, driving supplier alliance relationships, and building and delivering people excellence within the organization.
The opportunity to join a globally recognized company with strong values in action and great leadership were the two primary reasons for my decision to join the Caterpillar team.
2. What are your current roles and responsibilities at Caterpillar?
I am the chief procurement officer for Caterpillar Inc. and vice president in charge of the Global Purchasing Division. I have responsibility for leading Caterpillar's global procurement strategy and the company's relationships with its suppliers.
3. From your perspective, how and why do you believe that Caterpillar would benefit from hiring military veterans into the company?
We seek future employees with tangible leadership qualities tied to a record of quantifiable results. We also desire those who can show evidence they understand the value of continued learning and have the passion and confidence to continue improving themselves. Simply put, military veterans embody all of the qualities that Caterpillar desires in its workforce.
4. What would you say to the veteran candidate pool to encourage them to choose Caterpillar as their employer of choice?
Those who excel in their military experience bring a wealth of leadership, skill sets and practical application acumen that can easily be transferred into the private sector. Caterpillar's legacy culture is an excellent fit for any veteran ready to hit the ground running and immediately become a valued contributor.
