On October 25, Caterpillar announced plans to produce Cat® wheel material handlers at its Northern Ireland facility beginning in the middle of 2014.
Material handlers are typically used by customers around the world for scrap sorting and handling and forestry applications.
“This expansion recognizes the high standard of the facilities, processes and skills in Northern Ireland. We are making investments with a long-term view towards meeting our customers’ needs, while building an industry-leading range of products and support services from the base of operations in Northern Ireland,” said Jody Howard, general manager for Caterpillar’s Industrial & Waste Group.
This expansion will see the further development of skills at the company’s local operations, supported by the Department for Employment and Learning, and when fully established, approximately 100 additional positions will be required to run the operation.
“All Caterpillar Northern Ireland locations will benefit through the diversification of manufacturing, enabling us to continue to develop the skills and expertise of our local workforce,” said Caterpillar Northern Ireland Operations Director Robert Kennedy.
Production of the Cat material handlers will complement the industry-leading FG Wilson and Cat branded electric power products that will continue to be manufactured at the company’s Northern Ireland operations.
