Caterpillar to Participate in the 2014 China Development Forum

Later this month, Caterpillar Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman will attend the 2014 China Development Forum (CDF) and will serve as Honorary Co-Chair of the event. As Honorary Co-Chair, Doug will be featured as a guest speaker during the Opening Ceremony on March 23. This year marks the fifteenth year of the CDF and Caterpillar’s participation in the event is more important than ever.

This year’s theme is “China: To Comprehensively Deepen Reform,” which includes significant focus on what transformations are needed in the economic and social environments to secure a positive future for the people of China. There is great potential for continued growth in China in 2014 and beyond, and the forum will examine opportunities closely.

The three-day event is sponsored by the Development Research Center of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and hosted by the China Development Research Foundation. The schedule includes several panel presentations and working sessions focused on various economic issues and opportunities for China. In-depth discussions between China’s decision makers and global business leaders, international organizations and renowned scholars will be held on how to approach the issues at hand. The recommendations from the forum will be incorporated into China’s economic and social growth strategies.

Dozens of academic scholars, business and industry experts and Chinese government officials attend the forum. A few of the notable participants this year include representatives from the International Monetary Fund, The World Bank, IBM, Boeing, Saudi Arabian Oil Company, The Estee Lauder Companies, the United Nations, the London School of Economics, Harvard University and many more companies, organizations and universities.

Some of the panel discussion topics for this year’s forum include:

  • Manufacturing strength
  • Modernization of the agriculture industry
  • Education reform
  • Investing in women
  • Inclusive and sustainable urbanization
  • Tax system reform
  • Global trade opportunities through an open economy

Caterpillar is committed to Win in China and to expand our leadership in other growth markets. This is a significant piece of our Enterprise Strategy. China is an essential part of the global economy and over the last several years has become fully integrated into world trade markets. China is the world’s second largest economy and Caterpillar needs to have an even stronger presence in it in the future.

The CDF provides a unique opportunity for academic and business leaders, like Doug, to interact with Chinese government leaders and business peers.

“I’m honored to represent Caterpillar and serve as Honorary Co-Chair of this year’s CDF. I’m looking forward to the discussions about China’s efforts to deepen the comprehensive reforms that have been underway for many years,” says Doug.

“The sustained rise of China’s economy is a marvel. Since the first CDF was held 15 years ago, China has significantly expanded international trade and investment, has become an essential part of the global economy and millions of its citizens have been lifted out of poverty. I’m proud of our commitment to China, and especially proud of our employees throughout China who are committed to helping our customers succeed.”
