In 1925, companies created by C.L. Best and Benjamin Holt were brought together to form the Caterpillar Tractor Co. These two men developed and manufactured products that helped shape our industry, including inventing the first practical track-type tractors that were very quickly used across the world. Many of their patents are still relevant today in our product line.
We’re not the only ones who recognize Best and Holt as great innovators and leaders. The ARTBA Transportation Development Foundation recently inducted these Caterpillar co-founders into their Hall of Fame in recognition of their “extraordinary contributions to U.S. transportation development.”

About ARTBA and the ARTBA Foundation
Caterpillar is proud to be a steadfast friend of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association. ARTBA was founded in 1902 with the purpose of advocating for the construction of a federally-led highway system – a vision achieved by the U.S. Interstate highway system, starting in the 1950s. Today, the association continues to promote investment in transportation infrastructure to meet the country’s needs. The ARTBA Foundation supports research, education and public awareness. Helping Customers Build Infrastructure the U.S. – and the World – Needs
Many of ARTBA’s members are Caterpillar customers who work in construction, earthmoving and paving – building infrastructure that the public and businesses need to travel safely and efficiently. The United States is just one country in which we’re providing solutions to help our customers build a better world. We’ve proudly helped build infrastructure and support projects on all seven continents.
We estimate that, since our founding in 1925, Caterpillar equipment has cleared, built and paved more than 700,000 miles of roads in the United States. At the very least, that’s one-third of all paved roads in America today!
And, we look forward to continuing to support customers to help meet the world’s infrastructure needs.
