#ICYMI 2016: Sustainability

Every day, all day, there's no shortage of news and information coming at us from all directions. Emails. Social media. Search engines. Online and print newspapers. Magazines and newsletters. And hopefully caterpillar.com!

It's really difficult to keep up with it all, but we've got you covered. We've rounded up our most noteworthy sustainability stories published this year … in case you missed them when they were first published.

Natural Infrastructure: What Is It and Why Does It Matter?

"Caterpillar, our dealers and our customers know infrastructure. The world needs both conventional infrastructure – roads, bridges, canals, energy – as well as healthy natural infrastructure for long term success," said Karl Weiss, vice president with responsibility for Earthmoving.  Find out our plans to help restore natural infrastructure – including forests, prairies, agricultural lands, estuaries, coastal landscapes and wetlands – in this report.

From "Off the Grid" to Microgrids

The readily available electricity in our homes and offices is something many of us take for granted. But many parts of the world don't have access to safe and reliable energy. This year, Caterpillar Ventures announced an equity investment in Powerhive, to help make sustainable energy available to rural and remote regions.

We also announced new Cat Hybrid Microgrid Solutions that pair solar energy with Cat generator sets and industry-leading energy storage technology. To demonstrate the offering for our customers, we installed the system at our Tucson Proving Ground. Learn more about how the system works here.

Knowledge is Power

Lack of reliable energy is a problem in many developing countries, but providing reliable power to those countries is only part of the answer. Empowering local residents to operate and service their energy solutions is also necessary. In this story and video, find out how our local Cat Rental dealer Altaaqa Global transferred knowledge and power to people in Cameroon.

You Say Tomato, I Say Great Way to Capture Greenhouse Gas

In March, Caterpillar announced a collaboration with Sun Select Produce, Inc. Together, we plan to put to good use the excess heat and carbon dioxide from our power generation plant in Mossville, Illinois. In this article, find out how our power cogeneration plan will help grow food.

Recognized for Sustainability

Our employees design, develop and build machines and engines that are powerful, innovative and sustainable. This year, Caterpillar was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) – the 17th time we've been included in the list. Our contributions to sustainable development were also recognized by the United Nations.

Powered by Trash

As solid waste in landfills decomposes, landfill gas is released. Instead of allowing this gas, which contains methane, to be emitted into the atmosphere, our customer Montauk Energy will use the gas to generate enough electricity to power over 25,000 homes each year. Find out how our products and dealers are helping support the largest renewable energy project of its kind in the United States.

What We've Built. What We're Solving.

Over the last 90 years, Caterpillar has helped to make sustainable progress possible all over the world. We have an incredible history, but our work isn't done. We're committed to help solve the challenges facing the world's people, and technology is helping us find those solutions.
