Look for these buttons at the bottom of each article.

Peoria: The River City. Whiskeytown. Home of Caterpillar.

In February, we announced that our new global headquarters will be built in Peoria, Illinois, reaffirming our commitment to the city. However, construction won’t begin until after challenging marketplace conditions improve. If you haven’t seen the announcement video (or if it’s been a while), you can watch it here.

Faster, Better, More Efficient Innovation

In today’s age of technology, data touches everyone’s lives and drives progress across the globe. Companies that understand and leverage the value of Big Data will be the ones to succeed. In February, we celebrated the grand opening of our Data Innovation Lab, located in Research Park at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Learn about the opportunities the lab will provide here.

Quick on the Uptake

We’re combining Caterpillar’s engineering and design expertise with Uptake’s data analytics expertise to develop an end-to-end platform for predictive diagnostics. Why? Because we get it – if we can increase our customers’ uptime by warning of failures before they happen, our customers win. And when our customers win, we win. Learn more in the March press release and in this conversation between CEO Doug Oberhelman and Uptake CEO Brad Keywell.

Microgrids to Power Sustainable Progress. Anywhere.

Basic needs like healthcare and access to clean water require a critical element: electricity. But billions of people lack access to a reliable grid. This year, Caterpillar and First Solar signed a strategic alliance to develop microgrids that will bring power to remote areas and emerging markets. Find out more in the April announcement.

Showing Commitment to the African and Middle East Region (AME)

To ensure that the more than 7,000 dealer technicians in the AME Region can provide unsurpassed support to customers, Caterpillar will build a Regional Training Center in Dubai. The center will offer technical and sales training to customers and dealers in the AME Region. Read more in the announcement.

The Caterpillar Foundation also showed commitment to the region by joining forces with StartUp Cup and the U.S. Department of State to open Women’s Entrepreneurship Centers in Africa. When we invest in girls and women, entire communities benefit. Read this story to find out how the centers can help women like Maggie Musonda, a businessperson in Zambia.

The Airbnb of Construction Equipment

Think of how startups Uber and Airbnb have revolutionized the transportation and lodging industries. The so-called sharing economy has arrived. To help our customers maximize the use and productivity of their machines, we’ve provided strategic financing to Yard Club, a peer-to-peer rental platform for construction equipment. Learn more about the investment here.

A New U.S.-Cuba Future Begins

In July, Caterpillar celebrated the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba, a significant step towards normalization as the countries focus on their futures. Learn what this development could potentially mean for Caterpillar in this article.

Driving a New Product Strategy

Also in July, we announced the decision to independently design and manufacture Vocational Trucks at Caterpillar, specifically in Victoria, Texas. To date, the trucks were manufactured in Escobedo, Mexico, and designed in collaboration with Navistar. Read the full release.

A roundup of the most noteworthy stories of the year would be incomplete without the inclusion of September's restructuring announcements. On September 24, Caterpillar announced extensive restructuring and cost reduction plans. Once fully implemented, the plans are expected to reduce costs by $1.5 billion annually. The releases are here and here.
