Many outside of Caterpillar only know us for our construction or mining equipment, but for decades, Caterpillar has been making progress possible by providing reliable, sustainable energy to schools, hospitals, companies and communities all over the world.
“For so many, energy is life. Access to energy is fundamental to opportunity in this age. It’s the light that children study by; the energy that allows an idea to be transformed into a real business. It’s the lifeline for families to meet their most basic needs,” said Michele Sullivan, director of Corporate Social Innovation and president of the Caterpillar Foundation.
To commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Cat 3500 engine platform, the company is giving away a generator set equipped with a 3500 engine to an organization that empowers its local community. Through partnership between the Large Power Systems Division, Global Power Solutions Division and Global Government & Corporate Affairs, this product milestone provides the opportunity to highlight our corporate sustainability commitment and social innovation work.
“Our 3500 engine is really the gold standard for power generation around the world. One of these engines packaged into a generator set can provide power for a hospital, a school or even a small village,” said Tana Utley, Caterpillar vice president with responsibility for the Large Power Systems Division.
Working closely with our dealer network and the Caterpillar Foundation’s partners, we identified organizations that support their local community, despite lacking access to reliable energy themselves.
The public announcement of the giveaway and the recipient will be made on Saturday, September 24, at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City. Our announcement will be broadcast live on MSNBC and streamed via msnbc.com between 7 and 8 p.m. EDT. The Caterpillar Foundation has been a supporter of Global Citizen, an international education and advocacy organization working towards the end of extreme poverty, since 2014. The Global Citizen Festival is powered by Cat generators.
Like Caterpillar empowers its customers to build a stable societal infrastructure by providing world-class products and services, the Caterpillar Foundation is focused on building human infrastructure by empowering organizations that help to alleviate the root causes of global poverty and put people on the path to prosperity. Recently, the Foundation has placed an increased focus on investments in energy policy.
“We believe that access to safe and reliable energy is fundamental to disrupting the spiral of poverty,” said Sullivan. “Through investments in energy advocacy and policy with organizations like The ONE Campaign and the UN Foundation, we’re helping empower people to rise out of poverty.”
The company’s gift of a Cat 3500 generator will further that work. Manufactured in Lafayette, Indiana, and Tianjin, China, the Cat 3500 engine platform has been the industry standard for heavy duty diesel and gas engines worldwide for 35 years. With more than 190,000 engines in the field and more than 3 billion operating hours in mining, rail, electric power, oil and gas and marine applications, the 3500 exemplifies Caterpillar’s long-standing commitment to technical innovation and continuous improvement in the interest of advancing economic growth and human progress.
But, for us, it's much more than a product. Around the world, the talented people of Caterpillar bring their best to work every day. We build hope, security, progress—we are empowering individuals around the world who in turn are empowered to do great things for their communities.
We Are Empowered.

In conjunction with the 3500 genset giveaway, the Caterpillar Foundation is bringing attention to the fact that girls and women are disproportionally affected by a lack of energy access. Working with our non-profit partners, we’re highlighting the importance of energy access and the role we play in supporting it, with a particular focus on how access to energy can empower women around the world to improve their lives and reshape their futures.
