A team of six Caterpillar recruiters attended a “Hiring our Heroes” career fair for U.S. military veterans in Chicago recently. Hiring Our Heroes, a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, was launched in March 2011 as a nationwide initiative to help veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses find meaningful employment.
In addition to the career fair, which offered the opportunity to talk with Caterpillar and over 110 other employers, the Chicago event also offered a resume review area and a mock interview workshop. Hiring Our Heroes has hosted more than 650 hiring fairs in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.
“Our goal is to reduce unemployment rates of veterans and their spouses. We use the relationships that we have established to pair employers and veterans together,” stated Marady Leary of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Hiring Our Heroes program. They hope to create a movement across America in hundreds of communities where veterans and military families return every day.
Eric, an Army veteran, was attending his first “Hiring Our Heroes” event. He stated that he was attracted to the Caterpillar booth because of the strong brand and name recognition of Caterpillar. After talking with a recruiter he better understood the varied opportunities at Caterpillar and how the different pieces of our business fit together.
Michelle, a Navy veteran and current college student, stated that she learned a lot about our college/university hiring and was excited to hear that through our internships we offer ways to gain experience while still a student.
“An event like this gives us exposure to great talent and helps get the Caterpillar and Cat® brands communicated to a broader audience,” said Angie Borman, a Caterpillar recruiter. Caterpillar recruiters engaged in discussions with more than 150 veterans during the fair.
Caterpillar values the exceptional skills and discipline that U.S. military veterans bring to the job, and this fair was one way to help us build an even more talented, inclusive pool of candidates.
