Group President and CFO Brad Halverson has held 14 different positions in his 26-year career at Caterpillar. It wasn’t until he was named to his current role in January 2013 that he began consistently meeting with customers.
Having a customer focus starts at the top with Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman, and now Halverson has his senior finance representatives making customer visits a handful of times throughout the year.
“If I’d spent more time with customers earlier in my career, I would have been a better business manager for each of the businesses I was supporting,” said Halverson in a recent interview with Crain’s Chicago Business.
Now, you’ll regularly see Caterpillar’s Chief Financial Officer at places like the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. That visit allowed him to take in how a mining customer operated their business while seeing cutting edge technology such as autonomous Cat® D11 Track-Type Tractors maneuvering around the job site.
“Almost half of our annual growth rate is derived from new products, services and acquisitions. So it’s helpful to get back here and think about things like projects we’re launching, things we’re trying to get ahead of in the technology space and other resource allocation decisions,” Halverson said.
Halverson also touched on the importance of Human Resources, Information Technology and being a champion for innovation. Click here to see his full interview with Crain’s.
