Widespread floods and dangerous landslides affected thousands in the Balkans throughout the spring of 2014. More than 40,000 people were evacuated from their homes, landslides blocked roads, destroyed bridges, infrastructure and water lines and moved landmines—increasing the risk of danger for residents. By granting an upfront investment through the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP), the Caterpillar Foundation provides a funding base that allows the Red Cross to respond immediately to the needs of individuals and families impacted by disasters. The American Red Cross was able to support relief efforts in the Balkans by supplying immediate shelter, food, safe drinking water and other critical relief items to those in need.
