In February 1983, Kerry Barnes' family home burned down in Canisteo, New York. That night, Kerry's family lost everything except the pajamas they were wearing when they fled. The American Red Cross responded immediately with support, housing and necessities while her family rebuilt their house and their life. Kerry remembers how even the simplest things made a difference to her. "At that point, to even have a toothbrush to call my own was so important. It just makes you feel like a person again," she says. Every nine minutes, across the U.S., the Red Cross helps a family in the aftermath of a home fire.
