In 2013, a fire damaged Shannon Roberts' home in Washington, IL. The American Red Cross provided short-term financial help, toiletries, blankets and other supplies—and offered to set up the Roberts family with hotel accommodations while their house was being repaired. Just two months later, multiple tornadoes ripped through Washington, leaving mass destruction in their wake. Shannon wanted to help, so she volunteered to work with the Red Cross. She packed food and boxes and worked as a greeter, helping victims receive assistance and learn about other Red Cross disaster relief benefits. Today, Shannon is a committed Red Cross volunteer.
