Thomas Bugembe founded the Maryhill School in Uganda in 2006. With just 37 students, he held lessons in two rooms on a rented plot of land. With help from Opportunity International (OI), Thomas got a loan for a little over $8,000 to expand. Since then, Thomas has taken out multiple OI loans that allowed him to buy land, further develop his school's facilities, hire 22 teachers and grow the student population from 37 to 800—more than half of which are girls. Today, Maryhill School has two campuses: one for primary classes and one for kindergarten. Thomas is proud to be able to give back to his community by providing jobs for teachers and educating children for a brighter future.
