65 Years of Caterpillar at bauma Munich

Bauma 2019 is more than just a trade show. It's the world's leading trade fair — bringing visitors from around the world together in one place for an unrivaled experience. From taking up a small portion of the former Munich airport in 1954, bauma has grown to a 614,000 square meter exhibition space with 3,500 exhibitors and over 580,000 visitors from all over the world. From the very beginning customers have been able to see the latest Cat products and services at the show. Take a look at the last 65 years of Caterpillar and Zeppelin at bauma...

1954

Zeppelin Baumaschinen GmbH becomes the Cat® dealer in Germany. That same year, Zeppelin is involved in the first Bauma exhibition held in a portion of a former airport in Munich, Germany. Bauma would become the world's largest construction industry trade show.

1969

Zeppelin’s display at Bauma emphasizes the Cat D4 dozer and Cat 941, 951B, and 955K track loaders. The fair draws 120,000 attendees—30,000 more than anticipated.

1973

The Cat 225 Excavator is exhibited for the first time in Europe at the Bauma Fair.

1980

Zeppelin displays 24 Caterpillar-built products, including 18 earthmoving machines, 4 industrial diesel engines and generator sets, and 2 lift trucks. The theme of the display is "25 years of partnership - 25 years of progress," reflecting Zeppelin’s close association with Caterpillar.

1995

Caterpillar unveils its new product lineup at Bauma '95. Caterpillar and Zeppelin’s display is the largest of the 1,450 exhibits, displaying 39 products, 25 of which are new.

1998

Caterpillar, responding to changing customer needs for smaller, more versatile construction equipment, introduces a new line of compact machines. "The introduction of our new line of compact construction equipment is a big step forward for Caterpillar," said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Donald V. Fites. "Today, we're entering into a new business that will strengthen Caterpillar's global leadership position well into the next century."

Caterpillar, along with Zeppelin, again display the largest exhibit at Bauma. The show includes 47 products - 20 of which are new or improved. The 1998 show draws nearly half a million visitors.

2001

Caterpillar and Zeppelin again present the largest exhibit at Bauma. Chairman Glen Barton says Caterpillar is presenting the "biggest toolbox in the industry," showcasing its global leadership in customer value. Caterpillar displays more than 100 products, including 20 new and improved models, all of which offer customers the full benefit of value-added, leading edge design and technology.

Among these machines, two are launched worldwide: the 700-family of articulated trucks, and the emissions-compliant C9 model industrial engine. Making their first European appearance are the 130-ton 5110B hydraulic excavator, the 988G wheel loader, and the 432D and 442D models of the new D Series backhoe loader. Also launched are the services provided by Caterpillar and its dealers. Services “on display” include financing, insurance, rental, product service and support, and web-based information that help customers at every step of the acquisition and operating process.

2007

Visitors to the show in April see more than 60 Cat machines on display. Under the theme “Your Success. Our Commitment” Caterpillar highlights more than 60 solutions and products for its customers. Caterpillar Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jim Owens says, “During Bauma 2007, Caterpillar, alongside our dealer, Zeppelin, has a tremendous opportunity to engage customers and showcase our products and services in a region of the world that is key to the company’s success and future growth.” More than 400,000 visitors attend the show.

New products on display include the 992K large wheel loader, 953D track loader, D Series medium-size hydraulic excavators, M318D and M322D material handlers, H Series compact wheel loaders, C Series multi terrain loaders and skid steer loaders, and a number of new work tools. Many of the products are on display for the first time in the Europe, Africa, Middle East and Commonwealth of Independent States markets. All feature the new Cat Power Edge™ trade dress—the new combination of colors, striping, decals and trademarks that appear on Cat products—which captures the essence of the Cat brand.

2013

Caterpillar’s theme of the show – “Committed to Your Success. All Day. Every Day.” – means helping customers make more money with Cat products than with any others – and it begins with fuel economy.  “One of the stars of this show is a machine that epitomizes our commitment to bring value to our customers by lowering their owning and operating costs,” says Caterpillar Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman. “We’re launching our first-ever product to use our new hydraulic hybrid technology - the Cat 336E H. This excavator uses as much as 25 percent less fuel than the standard 336E, without sacrificing performance, and is a core example of Caterpillar’s innovation. Since fuel is one of our customers’ largest expenses, this hybrid technology can directly improve their bottom lines.”

Caterpillar displays 64 machines, 20 of them new introductions – the most new products Caterpillar has ever introduced at Bauma Munich. The Caterpillar display occupies more than 9000 square meters in the main indoor exhibit hall. One of the stars is the Cat 988K wheel loader that was launched at the show.

2016

Caterpillar and Zeppelin exhibit a suite of technologies, services, and equipment at Bauma 2016 under the theme “Built for It.” In a display space totaling more than 8200 square meters, the company successfully showcases safety, productivity, and equipment management solutions, as well as more than 60 Cat products, a large selection of work tools, and a full complement of dealer-delivered support services—all designed to make customers more successful.
