William Ainsworth

William (Billy) Ainsworth is a group president of Caterpillar Inc. with responsibility for the Energy & Transportation segment, which includes the Rail Division, Solar Turbines, Large Power Systems Division (LPSD), Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD), Electric Power Division and Oil, Gas and Marine Division.

Prior to his appointment as group president in 2019, Ainsworth was senior vice president and strategic advisor to the Caterpillar Executive Office, in addition to his responsibilities for the Rail Division.

Ainsworth started his career with a national scrap metal brokerage firm and held several positions with companies in that industry. In 1983, he founded Steel Processing Services, serving as its president and CEO. In 1993, Florida Progress purchased the operations of Steel Processing Services, along with two affiliated companies, changed the name to Progress Rail Services, and retained Ainsworth as president and CEO. In 2006, Caterpillar Inc. acquired Progress Rail Services, and Ainsworth was named a vice president of Caterpillar.

Ainsworth graduated from Auburn University in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He lives in Guntersville, Ala.
