The Women Who Inspire Me

I have been inspired by many amazing women over the years, but here is my short list.

My mom loved me before I was born and continues to instill me with confidence and encouragement to this day.

My grade school teacher, Mrs Sonsalla, nurtured my love for math despite any formal training in mathematics. She is the reason I’m an engineer.

In college I met the most influential woman in my life and she has been inspiring me for the last 27 years. She is so balanced and organized. I could never do the things she’s done, from teaching our kids to read before kindergarten to working professionally as an engineer to general contracting our home to managing our finances and social lives. Truly amazing.

Along the way I picked up a few things from Dean Leonard, a retired Caterpillar facility engineer, next door neighbor, and adopted grandpa to our kids, who provided an amazing example of how a husband should honor and love his wife for over 65 years.

My two daughters have inspired me by working as hard as the guys in the areas of academics and athletics with a mere fraction of the recognition, but for the love of the game and the personal satisfaction of doing their best.

Recently I was impressed by American Ninja Warrior, Kacy Catanzaro, a 5 foot tall college gymnast who competes exceptionally well in a sport where physical size is so advantageous to successfully completing some of the obstacles.

These are just a few examples of people who have shaped my opinion and have grown my admiration for how capable and important women are to all of us.
