Because Tomorrow Starts Today

I am being bold for change because my tomorrow starts today.

I am the Corporate Communications Director for a Fortune 100 company, a role I've always aspired to. But, it isn't only this role in life that defines me. I am also a leader, a wife, a mother, a daughter, an aunt, a friend and a community volunteer. For each of these roles, there is generally a script or a job description that denotes the duties, role expectations, and the general way to succeed. And, while everyone needs to turn to a safe place for some guidance, advice, counsel or words of wisdom, there are many roles in life where we feel compelled to follow the guidance of others explicitly - word for word - as if there is only one right way to perform these roles. While there isn't a single, right way to model any of these roles, there is a wrong way - and that way is being someone you’re not and not staying true to you, your ideals, and your beliefs.

I cherish each role in my life, but none is greater than my role as a mom to my four-year old son, Lucas. This month was Dr. Seuss month in his pre-K class and we read what seemed like dozens of those famous writings. The words are whimsical, the pictures are colorful, and the meaning is real - anything is possible if you believe, persevere, and hold your blessings near.

When I think about Being Bold for Change, I think about what I can do today in each of those roles in my life that will make tomorrow a better day for me, for my husband, for my family, for my teammates, my community, and most of all, my son. For as Dr. Seuss so wisely remarked, "Today I shall behave, as if this is the day I will be remembered," - remembered for not only my professional achievements, but also, and most importantly, for the impact I may be able to make on others and for showing my son that anything is possible if you believe in yourself.
