The drive to continue to deliver superior products and solutions has guided Team Caterpillar through many tough times in our 96-year history as a company. The Caterpillar Hosur facility demonstrated that drive as they faced capacity limitations and changes to their work environment to make it more socially distanced. But the essential nature of the engines they produce outweighed these challenges, Facility Manager Ramesh Muthuraman says.
“If the engines are not supplied and power is not running at a hospital, a ventilator might not be able to keep an ICU patient alive,” Ramesh said. “Similarly, the telecom network and towers needed to remain operational, so we could connect with those around the world and do our work. The output of the Hosur facility is essential and our customers needed us.”
Despite the odds, the facility achieved a major milestone of shipping the highest ever number of engines in a single year since the facility’s inception. It is this type of commitment to deliver for our customers that continues to inspire Ramesh and the team.
“Our work is so much more than building engines and making money.” Ramesh attributes much the facility’s success to the engagement of the team. “Engagement means showing commitment and making discretionary efforts to deliver excellence in Safety, Quality, Velocity and Cost on a continual basis. If you give our team a problem, they will solve it because they care for the organization and our purpose. The pressure and challenges will always be there, but the question becomes whether you enjoy your work and enjoy being at work. Our success is not luck. Rather, it’s the dedication and focus of the team to deliver excellence in everything we do as a team.”
At Caterpillar, it takes the contributions of each employee doing their part to achieve excellence. The resilience demonstrated by the Hosur Facility and teams all over the world in the face of uncertain times is nothing short of inspiring. Are you ready to do the work that matters?
