Melissa Hathcock began her career with Caterpillar as a marketing intern, and remained an intern over the course of three years. Now, Melissa continues her career with Caterpillar six years later in Human Resources and Labor Relations.
Melissa says she is surprised by the amount of data she leverages daily in her current role. Explaining the data is used to analyze various trends in recruitment and talent management to understand which best practices can be replicated by Caterpillar. Melissa is constantly looking for alternate ways Caterpillar can continue to improve and be a leader.
As an HR professional, Melissa interacts with a variety of people every day, which is something she says she loves about working at Caterpillar, as well as the ability to continue to learn and grow as an employee.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to have mentors and leaders who have invested in making me a better employee,” Hathcock says, “I also have a deep respect for the people I interact with in operations and engineering who are at the heart of what makes Caterpillar great.”
Melissa says some days can bring on surprising assignments, from consulting, to employee interaction, to partnering with the supply chain group to deploy management employees to our suppliers to assist with the onramp process.
In order to be successful in a role similar to hers, Melissa says one must be trustworthy, have good communication, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work on a team.
