Bridging Language Barriers Through the Caterpillar Latino Connection

When Maria Cravens started at Caterpillar she immediately noticed a potential barrier that was impacting the success of her team: dialogue with the Latino customer base.  As a leader within Caterpillar’s Latino Connection group (CLC), she set out to create the Spanish Lessons Program with a group of her teammates.

The program has been in place for six years now and has helped over 250 individuals to better communicate with customers.

This project allowed Maria to connect to her childhood roots, as she recalls growing up in Bogota, Colombia dreaming of working for Caterpillar. She said that as a little girl, she was always mesmerized by the yellow big machines that she called "dream builders.”

Maria joined team Caterpillar 2012 and today serves as a Marketing Support Representative for Latin America and as well as the chair of the Building Diversity Corporate Achievers program.

“As a Latin woman I am passionate especially when it comes to my career. It means a lot to me that Caterpillar values my contributions and provides resources like CLC, so I can bring my culture and background to the workplace,” said Maria, “The company is genuinely interested in looking for ways to better understand me, so I can perform at my full potential.”
