In celebration of National Welding Month, we are featuring welders across Caterpillar. Meet Jeff Miller:
Miller began his Caterpillar career in East Peoria in 2006 on second shift as a production welder. Six months later, he began pursuing an associate degree at a local college. After completing his associate’s in Welding Technologies in 2010, he left the shop floor and moved up as the CPS Master Weld Trainer. This role sent him around the U.S. qualifying Caterpillar welders to weld on Caterpillar products. Additionally, he taught other Caterpillar weld trainers to deliver the CPS weld training curriculum. In 2017, accomplished another personal milestone by earning his bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Industrial Management and Applied Engineering.
Who has inspired you in your career?
“I have met many great leaders in my journey here at Caterpillar who have inspired me, said Miller, “every one of them played a vital role in my welding career path.”
He says he’s very proud to tell family and friends where he works and how welding at Caterpillar has made him the person he is today.
What are your future goals?
The American Welding Society has stated that there are currently 200,000 welding related job openings in the U.S. and that number will grow to 350,000 in the next 5 years. Miller’s goal is to start working with young adults across the U.S. to attract them to welding careers and help them realize that this career path can open doors to many opportunities.
