Caterpillar is a melting pot of knowledge and cultures, and to celebrate this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month we set out to discover what makes our Caterpillar Latino Connection (CLC) members most proud about being part of the Hispanic/Latino community, and to share the impact the Hispanic/Latino culture has on our everyday lives.
Rosana
Customer Representative, CAT Financial Services
“It makes me proud, the fact that we are a hard-working community that strives for excellence.”
A key part of the Hispanic/Latino culture is a healthy work ethic and drive. This hard work and desire for excellence has led to many technological advancements. Photography, electric brakes, CAPTCHA, wireless phones and ballpoint pens are all attributed to Hispanic/Latino creators. So are color TV, e-books, the adjustable wrench, Earthquake Sensing Technology (EST) and the hot air balloon! Several key medical advancements are also attributed to Hispanic/Latino scientists, including the laryngoscope, the Neonatal Artificial Bubble, medicine administering bandages and the artificial heart.
In addition to being proud of our Hispanic/Latino heritage, our culture also permeates our everyday work and interactions with other employees.
Santiago
Digital Product Owner, Solar Turbines
“The strength and resiliency of Latino culture comes in part from enduring bonds of family. I have felt for a long time that I’m incredibly fortunate to have been born into the family I have, and I believe the same is true for many other Latinos.”
Jessica
Design Engineer, Integrated Components and Solutions
“I love our warmth and the way we light up when we said hi to our people, including the hugs and kisses. I like that in our culture, we tend to see the positive on almost every situation.”
We were also curious to know how CLC members see the impact of their Hispanic/Latino culture into the work they do every day at Caterpillar.
Gaby
Finance Representative, Asia Pacific Distribution
“I bring my culture to everything I do, as it is part of who I am. I bring the Latino passion, commitment, even the emotions into every task and every meeting. I am lucky to be part of a team that is inclusive, diverse and embraces cultural differences. We lift each other up and we learn from each other.”
Not only do we infuse our Hispanic/Latino culture in the work we do, but we also like to share it with our peers.
Michael
Supply Chain Manager, Energy &Transportation Purchasing
“I have been helping onboard a new supplier located in Mexico who does not speak English. I’ve used our weekly meetings to translate between the Cat and supplier teams. In addition to translating what’s being said I also speak about cultural things like holidays, customs, and food with the team.”
Laura
Marketing Consultant, Caterpillar Financial Insurance Services
“One of the many things I love from Caterpillar is the diverse team I work with in the Latin America Region. Due to my role, I have the opportunity to travel and receive visits from other Caterpillar locations. Every time I know someone is visiting Mexico for the first time, I share a little craftwork (i.e. keychain, magnet, scarf) that represents our culture.”
Another important part of the Hispanic/Latino culture is its food. Imagine a world without pizza, spaghetti sauce, or salsa! The foods that originated in Latin America had a huge influence on dishes and cuisines all over the world. We can’t imagine a world without corn, potatoes, tomatoes, chocolate, bubble gum (chicle), chili peppers, avocado, strawberries, pineapple and peanut butter.
The creative minds and palettes of the Hispanic/Latino culture make our community proud and contribute to the vibrant colors of our interconnected world.
I am proud to sponsor the Caterpillar Latino Connection (CLC), and excited to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! This month recognizes the achievements and contributions of Hispanic American champions who have inspired others to achieve success.
Beginning in 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month was originally observed as “Hispanic Heritage Week” under President Lyndon Johnson, but it was later extended to a month during President Ronald Reagan’s term in 1988. Since then, the month has been celebrated nationwide through festivals, art shows, conferences, community gatherings, and much more. The month also celebrates the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile.
This is a great opportunity to raise awareness across the enterprise about Hispanic Heritage, CLC and the outstanding work our global chapters are doing.
