Chris Blin spends most of his time assisting customers around the world and does it from the comfort of his home. Blin says Caterpillar’s flexible work arrangement allows him to be successful in both his career and personal life.
For Chris Blin, flexing his work life balance is no problem. As part of the Caterpillar Marine HR team based in Sweden and Singapore, he manages his day to day activities while on the go.
Blin says he uses Caterpillar’s collaboration tools and technology to manage his work while traveling and leverages a flexible work arrangement to work from home when he is not on the road. When asked to describe his regular working day, he says it is not your average nine to five.
“With leaders and employees covering nine time zones, I need to be flexible and balance my time to support these groups, but also ensure I spend quality time with my family.”
When he is not traveling, Blin spends his early hours supporting Caterpillar Asia employees in China and Singapore before breakfast with his family. After Asia, he moves on to his European colleagues who have just begun their work day.
A large part of Blin’s job is spent in meetings, coaching sessions, and workshops which he attends virtually.
“It may sound great to work from home; however, it does take discipline and focus to manage your time effectively when 90% is done virtually!”
Blin says the biggest challenge is to split work from your personal time while at home. He says he values working from home because it allows him to spend quality time with his family.
“Having the ability to have a flexible work arrangement at Caterpillar has been a critical element of my success and allowed me to be an effective HR manager for my team and our customers. Most importantly, it helps me feel that I am being a good dad and husband by supporting my family.”
