In the railroad industry, time isn’t just money. Time is everything.
Time is so integral to the rail business that the standardized time system we all take for granted today was developed because of railroads. After all, it’s pretty difficult to make the trains run on time if the people in different stations don’t agree on what time it is.
For Progress Rail and EMD customers, downtime is bad enough. When a locomotive isn’t running, it’s not making money for the customer. But unscheduled downtime can be so much worse. If a locomotive fails at the wrong time, railroads might not be able to deliver products or passengers to their destinations on time. If a locomotive goes down en route, several freight and passenger trains behind it might also be delayed.
In short, for railroads, downtime can mean lost income – and lost reputation with their customers.
That’s why, this week, Progress Rail introduced EMD Uptime, a predictive analytics platform that will transform the rail industry.
Progress Rail developed Uptime in partnership with Uptake, a Chicago-based, world-class provider of predictive analytics and insight software. In March 2015, Uptake and Caterpillar joined forces to develop end-to-end platforms for customers in a wide variety of industries. These platforms – like EMD Uptime – will allow customers to monitor and optimize their fleets more effectively.
In real time, Uptime monitors our rail customers’ locomotives. Uptime learns from the large amount of data it receives from each locomotive, and it can predict potential failures in locomotives before they occur. When Uptime identifies a problem – like low fuel pressure – in a locomotive, the platform alerts the customer and provides them with diagnostics, prognostics and repair recommendations to prevent faults and unscheduled downtime.
That helps our customers keep their locomotives running on schedule, which helps their customers’ products and passengers arrive to their destinations safely and on time.
Because we understand: Nothing is more valuable than time. Especially on the railroad tracks.
