D. James (Jim) Umpleby is a group president of Caterpillar Inc. in >Peoria, Ill. Umpleby has administrative responsibility for Caterpillar's energy and power systems group, which includes Industrial Power Systems & Growth Markets Division, Large Power Systems & Growth Markets Division, Marine & Petroleum Power Division, Electric Power Division, Progress Rail Division and the Solar Turbines Division.

Since joining Solar Turbines Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc., in 1980 as an associate engineer, Umpleby has held numerous positions of increasing responsibility in manufacturing, engineering, sales, marketing and customer services. From 1984 to 1990, Umpleby lived in Asia and held positions in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 1990, Umpleby was named manager of Solar’s project applications engineering department in San Diego. He became director of power systems operations and plant manager of Solar's Kearny Mesa gas turbine packaging facility in 1994.

Umpleby was promoted to a Solar vice president in 1997 with responsibility for Solar's customer services business. He became Solar's vice president of Turbomachinery Products in 2000 with responsibility for design engineering, manufacturing and supply chain. He served as vice president for Solar's power generation business in 2004. Umpleby transferred to Peoria, Ill., in 2005 as general manager of global services for Caterpillar's Product Support Division and returned to Solar in 2007 as vice president for Solar's oil and gas business. The Caterpillar Board of Directors elected Umpleby a Caterpillar vice president and president of Solar Turbines in 2010. He was named group president and a member of Caterpillar’s executive office effective January 2013.

Umpleby graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 1980. He completed an executive leadership program at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1996.

Umpleby is an executive committee member of the board of directors of the Interstate Natural Gas Association of (INGAA) Foundation.
