Valparaiso University Opens New Engineering Innovation Center Named for Former Caterpillar CEO Donald V. Fites
Former Caterpillar Chairman and CEO Don Fites celebrated the dedication of the new Donald V. Fites Engineering Innovation Center at Valparaiso University on Saturday.
The center, which features 13,740 square feet of new construction along with a 4,300-square-foot renovation of existing laboratory space for engineering students, opened at the start of the 2011 academic year. In addition to more learning space, the center offers state of the art laboratory technology in order to enhance innovative and creative learning experiences to help develop outstanding engineers.
Fites graduated from Valparaiso University in 1956 with a degree in civil engineering. He was later awarded the honorary doctor of laws degree from Valparaiso. He serves on the Valparaiso University Board of Directors.
Also present at the dedication ceremony were Caterpillar Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman and Product Development & Global Technology Vice President Tana Utley.
Speaking to a crowd of several hundred people, who gathered for the dedication, Oberhelman called the new center an important legacy for Fites and the university.
"Studies show the most robust economies have two things in common: innovation and commercialization of technology. This remarkable facility is emblematic of Valparaiso's focus on engineers' key role in both these things. Engineering education is a cornerstone in creating the people and jobs that power our economy," Oberhelman said.
Fites and Valparaiso University President Mark Heckler concluded Saturday's dedication ceremony with a ribbon cutting.
