Innovative Technology
At Caterpillar, we solve the complex environmental and performance challenges faced by our customers on the ground by developing technology solutions that innovate the way they work, streamline the entire supply chain, promote an injury-free environment and break through the limitations of the product life cycle.
Caterpillar has a solid track record as a technology leader. We have been consistently recognized for our use of advanced technologies that simultaneously meet our customers' needs and our environmental responsibilities. Here are just a few examples:
ACERT Technology
Caterpillar's ACERTTM technology for truck engines is an exclusive, breakthrough solution for emissions reduction that exceeds U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations and incorporates over 250 patents. The result of more than $500 million in research and development, ACERT technology not only improves emissions—it does so without sacrificing fuel-efficiency, reliability, long life or operating costs.
Mining Technology
Improving equipment performance helps mining customers improve efficiency and minimize their environmental footprint. Through our products and services, we play an important role in helping miners extract and deliver coal, copper, iron ore, nickel and other metals and minerals as efficiently and cost effectively as possible. We're working with mines around the world to hold down the overall cost of providing raw materials and to protect the environments in which they operate. We also participate in the life cycle of resources in ways that might not be obvious. At Rio Tinto Minerals' Montana mine, for example, some of the talc extracted is used to produce a critical component in our catalytic converters—part of our diesel emissions reduction technologies.
Autonomous Robotics
Imagine: Robotic bulldozers and other construction equipment could autonomously mine for materials or help build future businesses and houses. Caterpillar is working to make it possible by developing robotic and remotely-controlled construction vehicles. Mining is just one area that could substantially benefit from robotics. With an increase in research and development spending focused on this new technology, Caterpillar well-positioned to lead in autonomous equipment development.
