SEM builds heavy-duty wheel loaders in China for over 50 years

SEM became a wholly owned subsidiary in 2008 and leveraged Caterpillar advanced process knowledge on supply chain, engineering design and operations management to become a best-in-class manufacturer of price competitive earthmoving equipment. SEM products meet or exceed regional industry requirements for quality and reliability that target customers who emphasize on initial acquisition cost over long-term total cost of ownership. SEM has developed a dedicated lean distribution channel in China and in selected markets around the world and SEM products have been sold to more than 80 countries.

SEM is a brand of compact, small and mid-sized wheel loaders, 18 to 22 ton soil compactors, mid-sized motor graders and landfill compactors for Chinese domestic and select growth markets around the world. SEM products are positioned at the top end of the utility value proposition with respect to price, primarily because of the perceived reliability and durability for heavy-duty applications and high parts availability.

In China, the machines are sold through a network of 60 SEM dealers, owned by Cat dealer principals or existing SEM local agents. In markets outside of China, the products are sold exclusively through a Cat dealer principal owned SEM channel that is separated from the Cat dealership with independent locations and identity. Key exports markets for SEM machines include Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America, CIS, India, and the Middle East.

SEM products meet or exceed regional industry requirements for quality and reliability that target customers who emphasize initial acquisition cost over long-term total cost of ownership. The majority of SEM customers are small entrepreneurs that have recently entered the business. Typically, their business time horizons are less than three years. As a result, initial price is the key buying criteria followed closely by reliability and parts availability.
